The year 1738 was another crucial period in Wesley's life. He began the year in the mid-Atlantic, on board the ship Samuel returning from his frustrating mission to Georgia. During the subsequent spring and summer, he came to know and feel the "assurance of faith in its 'true' sense" (according to his Moravian friends). During the autumn he became acquainted with the work of the Holy Spirit in the Great Awakening in New England through the writings of Jonathan Edwards. Shortly thereafter, he rediscovered in the Homilies of the Church of England an understanding of faith and salvation nearly identical to what he had been putting together for himself for the past decade or more.

Three times during this period Wesley paused to analyxe his spiritual condition and evaluate his spiritual progress. In early June, he wrote an account of his "Aldersgate experience, familiar to many readers of Wesley's journal. It represents his outlook almost immediately after his 'heart was strangely warmed.'" Just five months earlier in the mid-Atlantic, he had written an autobiographical summary that similarly reviewed his spiritual progress. After the year was over, he again reflected on his spiritual condition in a summary later published in his Journal. The reflections in these three accounts help us measure and put in perspective the significance of the events of this important year in Wesley's continuing spiritual and theological development.
