[18세기 영국생활] 일년 생활비

1759년 "조셉 매시"의 조사 보고에 따르면, 영국 인구의 절반이 23 파운드보다 적은 돈을 일년 생활비로 사용하였다. 한달에 55만원 정도로 계산할 수 있을 것이다. 아마도, 한 가족 단위로 계산한 생활비이기 쉽다. 개인으로 보아도, 만만한 생활은 아니었을 것이다. 그 때쯤, 런던의 평균 수명이 36.6세였다는 슬픈 보고서가 사실일 수도 있겠다는 생각도 다시하게 된다.

"In the eighteenth century, infant mortality (the percentage of babies who die before the end of their first year) was running at approximately 20 per cent and something like 30 per cent died before turning five years old. With life expectancy in the early thirties in the first third of the century, most parents would not live to see their children grow up.
