[Journal] 1747. Feb.24. 남 생각하는 사람들

1747년 2월 24일 화요일 

At noon I examined the little society at Tetney. I have not seen such another in all England. In the class-paper (which gives an account of the contribution for the poor) I observed one gave eight pence, often ten pence, a week; another, thirteen, fifteen, or eighteen pence; another sometimes one, sometimes two shillings. I asked Micah Elmoor, the leader (an Israelite indeed, who now rests from his labour), ‘How is this? Are you the richest society in England?’ He answered, ‘I suppose not. But all of us who are single persons have agreed together to give both ourselves and all we have to God. And we do it gladly, whereby we are able from time to time to entertain all the strangers that come to Tetney, who often have no food to eat, nor any friend to give them a lodging.’

테트니는 영국 라우스에서 북쪽으로 걸어서 3시간 30분 거리에 있다. 1747년 그곳에 있던 작은 모임에서 놀라운 광경을 목격하였다. "속회일지(class-paper)"에서 발견한 것이다. 한 주에 한 사람이 8펜스, 보통 10펜스를 헌금하였다. 다른 지방에서는 한 주에 1페니가 보통이었다. 그러고보니 이곳 테트니에서 다른 사람은 13, 15, 18펜스를 헌금하기도 하고, 또 다른 사람은 때때로 2실링을 헌금하였다.[각주1] 

그 많은 헌금에 대해서 모임(society)의 리더에게 물어 보았다. 리더의 이름은 미가 엘무어였다. 어떻게 사람들이 이렇게 많은 헌금을 하지요? 영국에서 가장 돈이 많은 모임이겠어요? 

미가 엘무어의 대답은 이랬다. "그렇지는 않겠지요. 하지만, 우리 한 사람 한 사람 모두는 동의했지요. 우리 자신과 우리가 가진 모든 것을 하나님께 드리기로 했습니다. 우리는 기쁘게 동의했지요. 그래서 우리는 테트니에 오는 모든 분들을 언제든지 대접할 수 있습니다. 그 분들은 보통 먹을 음식이 없는 가난한 분들이고, 맞이해 줄 친구가 아무도 없는 낯선 분들이지요." 

* 남 생각을 하면서 살기는 참 어렵다. 1747년 2월에 목격한 놀라운 광경은 무엇이었을까? (1) 남 생각하는 사람들의 모임이 존재한다는 것, (2) 그들이 혼자가 아니라 함께 하고 있다는 것, (3) 무엇보다 가난한 사람들을 생각한다는 것, 그것이라는 생각이 든다.  

* 21세기에 적용이 가능할까? 낮고 낮은 자리를 잊지 않는 마음, 외로운 사람들(strangers)이 기댈 곳을 찾아주는 마음. 그 정도면, 18세기 테트니 마을의 작은 모임이 21세기에도 필요하지 않을까?
